Dentures are prosthetics that are used to replace a large number of missing teeth. These dentures are removable and can be taken and placed back in your mouth. Although nothing can compare to your natural teeth, dentures at Enhance Family Dental are more comfortable and natural looking than ever.

Types of Dentures

Full or Complete Dentures

A complete denture is made for you if you have lost all your natural teeth or your existing teeth are too damaged to be restored and need to be extracted. If your teeth are extracted, it may take months for your gums to heal, during which you will be given a set of immediate dentures.

Immediate Full Dentures

Immediate dentures are inserted in your mouth immediately after your teeth have been removed. The measurements for these dentures take place during a prior visit at Enhance Family Dental so that when you come for your tooth extraction, you do not leave without teeth.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are fitted when your mouth still retains some of its natural teeth. These dentures are anchored to a metal framework that attaches to your natural teeth. In some cases, crowns are placed on your natural teeth, and the framework is attached to them. Partial dentures are removable options to dental bridges.

How Dentures Work

Dentures are custom-made in a dental laboratory to fit your mouth. Complete dentures consist of an acrylic resin base that molds to your gum. The denture for your upper arch covers the roof of your mouth while the lower denture is horseshoe-shaped to allow for the free movement of the tongue.

How To Maintain Your Dentures

Removable complete or partial dentures need to be cleaned and stored properly to ensure they give you the best functionality and smile. To maintain your denture:

•  Remove your dentures after eating and rinse them with cool water. You should fill your sink with water or place a towel beneath your feet so that if your dentures slip, they don’t break.
•  Do not contort the metal or plastic framework during cleaning.
•  Brush your remaining teeth (if any) and gums with a soft bristled toothbrush to get rid of food debris.
•  Brush your dentures at least once a day to remove food and plaque.
•  Soak your dentures overnight in a glass of water or a denture-soaking solution so that they retain their shape.
•  Rinse your dentures thoroughly, especially if you have soaked them in denture-soaking solution, before putting them in your mouth.
•  Do not use bleaching products, hard-bristled toothbrushes, or harsh toothpaste that can damage your dentures.
•  Do not wash your dentures with hot water as it can distort their shape.
•  If you feel your dentures are loose and uncomfortable, schedule a visit by calling us at (586) 666-4950 promptly. Loose dentures can cause sores, abrasions and infections.

Make sure you always arrive at your scheduled dental check-ups. This will enable us to check to see if your dentures have any issues and if your mouth is healthy.
